By Stefan Sagmeister May 11, 2023

This month in our series “One Book and Why,” graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister recommends A Year with Swollen Appendices, a book of essays, msuings, and observations by rock music provacateur Brian Eno, prominent since the 1970s when he founded the band Roxy Music.

A Year with Swollen Appendices by Brian Eno, 25th-anniversary edition (paperback), 2023.

The book is in the form of a diary for the year 1995 and covers topics from David Bowie to war in the Balkans. First published in 1996, it has been reissued in a 25th anniversary edition just released in paperback with a new introduction by the author.

“It’s filled with useful descriptions of strategies, interesting for anybody who is working in the world of ideas and beauty. I am always astonished at just how very smart some people are—Brian is one of them.” — Stefan Sagmeister
