Announcing Designers & Books Fair 2012 and Call for Ideas for Future Design Books
By Steve Kroeter August 2, 2012Designers & Books Fair 2012
We at Designers & Books are excited to be hosting the first-ever book fair in New York City to focus on architecture and design book publishing—bringing to you live the two topics that we are passionate about: designers (including architects, and graphic, fashion, interior, landscape, product, and urban designers) and the books that inspire them.
Designers & Books Fair 2012—to be held Saturday, October 27, and Sunday, October 28, at the F.I.T Conference Center on 27th Street and 7th Avenue—will feature an exhibition hall filled with U. S. and European publishers displaying and selling their new Fall and holiday season 2012 design titles, as well as important backlist titles. Booksellers and rare and out-of-print book dealers specializing in design books will also be displaying and selling books. Renowned designers and design world personalities will be participating in panel discussions, interviews, and special presentations. We hope you will join us.
Visit Designers & Books Fair 2012 for details about the Fair.
Call for Ideas and Topics for Future Design Books!
Designers & Books Fair 2012 presents a great opportunity to encourage a dialogue between those who publish design books and those who buy them. One way we will be addressing this is by presenting a panel on how aspiring writers of design books can become familiar with the publishing process. In addition, we’d like to ask you, our site visitors—whether you are a design student, a design professional, or you simply have an interest in the subject—what kinds of design books you’d like to see published but haven’t been able to find. Why hasn't anyone done a book on ______? We’d like you to send us your ideas.
You can send your ideas for design books you would like to see published by:
· Tweeting your idea: Use hashtag #DBFair2012
· E-mailing us at:
· Blogging about your idea and then sending us the link
These ideas can relate to any topic in design or architecture. We will post the ideas, along with the names of the individuals who proposed them, on Designers & Books. The list of ideas will be presented to the publishers attending Designers & Books Fair 2012.
Why do this? Our goal is to encourage a new level of conversation between design book publishers and their readers and customers—one in which new, creative and innovative ideas can emerge. We look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Meet Me by the Fountain: An Inside History of the Mall

Publisher: Bloomsbury
Published: June 2022
Chronicles postwar architects’ and merchants’ invention of the shopping mall, revealing how the design of these marketplaces played an integral role in their cultural ascent. Publishers Weekly writes, “Contending that malls answer ‘the basic human need’ of bringing people together, influential design critic Lange advocates for retrofitting abandoned shopping centers into college campuses, senior housing, and ‘ethnocentric marketplaces’ catering to immigrant communities. Lucid and well researched, this is an insightful study of an overlooked and undervalued architectural form.”
